Naar aanleiding van de rol van de kerken in de Oekraïnse crisis heeft de Raad van Kerken in Nederland vandaag een brief ter bemoeidiging en steun gezonden aan de Oekraïnse Raad van Kerken en Geloofsgemeenschappen. Bij deze Raad zijn de grote kerken en ook gemeenschappen van joden, boeddhisten en moslims aangesloten. De Raad heeft zich regelmatig uitgesproken voor een vreedzame oplossing van de conflicten. Metropoliet Onufry (zie foto), ad interim van de Oekraiense-Orthodoxe Kerk, verwoordde dat in een verklaring naar de gebeurtenissen in Odessa waarbij 46 mensen in een brand waren omgekomen aldus: ‘Ik vraag de mensen van de Oekraïne, ongeacht hun nationaliteit of godsdienst, wees wijs en geeft niet toe aan provocaties … Oekraïne, ons gezamenlijk huis! Laten we bidden dat we geen desintegratie en chaos over onszelf afroepen.’
Het doet pijn om te zien hoe er van kerken en gelovigen wordt geëist om partij te kiezen, aldus een vertegenwoordiger van de Orthodoxe Kerk in Nederland. De Raad voelt mee met de kerken aldaar en met de mensen.
De brief van de Raad luidt:
“On behalf of the Council of Churches in the Netherlands we send you a letter of sympathy and support. Over the last months developments in Ukraine have gone very fast. The country is going through a period of big changes and tensions. In the eastern part of Ukraine it even came to open conflict and violence.
From a distance we try to follow as good as possible the developments. In particular over the last twenty years, contacts between representatives of churches and church-organisations in the Netherlands with churches, NGO’s and academic institutions in Ukraine are increasingly growing . These contacts have brought us closer to each other.
First of all we hope and pray that the current tensions and conflicts will be solved in a peaceful way so that Ukraine can work in peace and freedom for the better of the entire society and its people.
In times like these it matters very much how churches fulfil their responsibility in society. We are very much impressed by the way the All-Ukrainian Council of Churches and Religious Organisations responds to this responsibility and incessantly calls for a peaceful solution of the conflict. Moreover, you found the strength and faith, despite all differences, to express a common position in successive public statements .
We sincerely hope that the Council of Churches and Religious Organisations also in the future will be able to fulfil this important task to bridge different positions in order to witness in unity for justice, peace and the wellbeing of all people in Ukraine.
